Work Songs / Field Hollers
The African American work songs and unaccompanied field hollers carried from slavery through sharecropping and prison labor. Sung to the rhythm of arduous field work and railroad construction, their call-and-response became the structural and physical foundation of the blues. Alan Lomax's field recordings of the 1930s–40s captured this culture on tape.
